1:1s are a dedicated time and space to talk about anything and everything you wish.
- 1:1s are essential:
- 30 minutes.
- Scheduled.
- Every week.
- Never (or very rarely) skipped.
- Sometimes moved.
- It's your meeting, so you will lead it.
We will have a shared document of some sort to:
- Keep notes.
- Raise issues for discussion in our next 1:1.
- To keep track of our actions.
- Track your development goals.
1:1s are primarily for you, secondarily for me. Sometimes we will just shoot the breeze, and that's fine, but generally we will cover three things.
1) You to me
- What's going on (in and out of work).
- Do you need any help?
- How are you feeling (it's completely OK to be both grumpy and jubilant).
- Don't wait for a 1:1 to raise something important to you.
- Any feedback for me?
- What can I do better?
2) Me to you
- Feedback.
- Any cascading updates.
- Confirmation of our priorities.
